Construction Projects Investing in the Future

We are continuously building and modernizing in order to meet our customers’ expectations.

We are creating a world-class airport experience

Our passengers and all our visitors expect to be able to use the airport facilities safely and comfortably.

Fraport will invest around €485 million a year in the infrastructure of Frankfurt Airport between now and 2026. Its buildings, runways, taxiways and technical systems are the foundations of Germany’s largest aviation hub. Construction projects, renovation work and conversion work make an important contribution to providing a world-class airport experience, in line with our mission statement “Gute Reise! We make it happen”. They ensure our passengers and visitors can use the airport safely and comfortably. With this in mind, we are continuously building and modernizing in order to meet our customers’ expectations.

Our experts from various disciplines work together in a spirit of mutual trust to successfully bring to fruition challenging large-scale projects.

Our existing infrastructure comprises ...

26 square kilometers in Frankfurt Airport City
150 kilometers of roadway
around 7 kilometers of apron
around 420 buildings
52500 rooms
35500 apron lights

Multifaceted construction projects

We work on roughly 300 projects a year – from construction projects, modernization and renovation works to maintenance.

Construction above and below ground, structural engineering, modernization works, construction of roads and tunnels – our projects are as multifaceted as our passengers and visitors.

To meet the wide-ranging requirements, tasks and challenges involved in airport projects, we work with specialists from various disciplines, including architecture, engineering, specialist planning and facility management.

We are modernizing to achieve greater sustainability and smart automation.

Terminal 1 opened to the public in 1972 and has been continuously expanded and upgraded over the decades. We are constantly performing substantial modernization work in order to make it compliant with current regulations, contemporary design standards and customer expectations. We also focus on energy optimization and smart automation in the process.

When it comes to a property of this size, modernization is an ongoing task that demands sustained investment over the entire lifecycle in order to keep pace with technical progress and changes in travel behavior.

Ongoing projects in the various disciplines include:

  • Structural fire protection
  • Replacement of elevators and escalators
  • Modernization of technology control centers
Terminal 1: Building 201

This project in Terminal 1 involves renovating an entire building in two sections.

Building 201 is being renovated. It consists of seven upper floors and two basement floors. Once work phase 3 was approved in May 2017, work phases 4 and 5 commenced for all works including roof renovation, the renovation of restroom facilities and facade lighting.

Construction site logistics for the project are a particular challenge. The planning application was submitted in the second quarter of 2018, and construction began in the fourth quarter of 2019. Performance of the construction work will be split between two sections.

The airport is always moving, and we create the connections that keep it moving.

Station F in Building 211 will serve as the start and destination station of the people mover system link to Terminal 3. In addition to the station, structural connections will be created to the long-distance train station, as well as to Terminal 1/Hall B and the Sheraton Hotel. A new bus station will be constructed below the people mover system station on the drive-by area at level 01. The Sheraton Bridge East is being dismantled as the first step in the new construction project. The basement retail space in level U1 in the eastern section of the Airport City Mall, Building 212, is also being reconfigured.

People mover system Station F is scheduled to be fully open to the public in spring 2023.

Meeting market requirements

As per the planning approval notice, Fraport is going to gradually extend the aprons and construct the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) on a new area of land in the south-west section of the airport.

It will be adapting the existing infrastructure to reflect the statutory provisions (e.g. EASA) and is also planning to adapt and update the aircraft positions in line with the requirements of the market and functions (e.g. changes in aircraft types such as the A380, the Boeing 777, etc.).

Ongoing projects in the various disciplines include:

  • Construction below ground
  • Structural engineering
  • 400 hertz power supply
  • Beacons
  • Lighting, signage
  • Telecontrol systems

Fraport renovates the taxiways without interrupting airport operations.

Due to their intensive use, the taxiways need to be renovated without interrupting airport operations. New shafts and cable routes also need to be built, while some of the old halogen beacons are replaced by LED technology.

The total area that Fraport renovated in 2018/2019 spanned around 420,000 square meters. The taxiway system was gradually extended in accordance with the planning approval notice. In 2018, taxiway M34 was built and work got underway on closing the gap in taxiway R. The area encompassed by both of these projects is around 39,000 square meters.

Ongoing projects in the various disciplines include:

  • Construction below ground
  • Structural engineering
  • Beacons
  • Lighting, signage

Noise barrier at Frankfurt Airport

Fraport is replacing the noise barrier that was built between 1970 and 1984.

The old noise barrier was constructed along the airport ring road between 1970 and 1984. It is now being replaced with a new structure that will be over 2,600 meters long and feature steel girders and inserted aluminum noise protection elements. The barrier will have a height of 8 meters in the vicinity of the Lufthansa hangar apron and will replicate the current height of 15 meters at the western end. Elsewhere, it will have a height of around 4 meters. The planning applications were submitted by the end of 2018. The completion is scheduled for 2021.
