Climate Protection
Fraport has set itself the mission of reducing its CO2 emissions continuously, reaching net zero by 2050.
Clear strategy for climate protection
Fraport AG will significantly reduce CO2 emissions within the Group and at Frankfurt Airport by 2030. The aim is to cut emissions to 125,000 metric tons of CO2 per year in the Group as a whole and to 80,000 metric tons at Frankfurt Airport. Fraport’s targets for its Group airports are based on those set by the countries in which they are located. Frankfurt Airport, for instance, is taking its 2030 target from the German government’s Climate Action Plan to 2050, by which time even Fraport’s CO2 emissions at the airport are to be cut to zero.
Fraport is leveraging savings in four areas in its efforts to meet its targets:
- Energy consumption in infrastructure
- Energy consumption in traffic and transport
- Energy mix
- Smart air conditioning
Dr. Wolfgang Scholze, Head of Environmental Management, Fraport AG
“Our job is to ensure that airport operation is as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. In the future, this will also include self-generation of renewable energy at the airport.”
It was the Fraport Group that co-developed the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme. This is a scheme engineered by the Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) with the aim of encouraging as many European airports as possible to comprehensively manage their CO2 emissions and become carbon neutral. The ACA scheme has now become a global industry standard.
In 2009, Fraport was the first airport operator in the world to obtain this certificate for Frankfurt Airport. Every year since then, the high optimization level has been recertified, for the eleventh year in succession in 2020.
The energy saved in a year could power the floodlight at the Allianz Arena in Munich for over 2.5 years.
You could provide 8,600 households per year with the saved power from our terminals.
Going forward, it will generate around 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year.
This applies both to passenger vehicles as well as special ground handling vehicles on the apron.
